A Rohingya shopkeeper has been arrested and tortured for making copies of the white card in Buthidaung town, reports our local correspondent.

Rohingyas throughout Arakan have been alarmed by the sudden government decision to withdraw identity cards known as white cards. So many Rohingyas consider it important to make copies of their white card as evidence of their claims as residents of Burma.

However on Monday, police came to the computer store of Ziaur Rahman in Buthidaung town and caught him scanning and making copies of white cards. Police seized all the documents and arrested Rahman on the spot.

He was then taken to custody and tortured mercilessly. He was then transferred to the jail and is now awaiting verdict.

Local Muslims who handed their identity cards to Rahman for making copies have been heavily fined, according to a source.
