Muslims in the city of Akyab, the capital of Myanmar’s Arakan state, had to demolish a mosque after authorities threatened to impose severe penalties against their elders if they did not respond to the demolition.
A local resident told Arakan news agency that local authorities arrested a number of Rohingya Muslims east of the city of Akyab and asked to demolish their mosque and threatened them with imprisonment if they did not respond.
The mosque was severely damaged after the city suffered a severe rain and wind wave last month, prompting Muslims to rebuild and restore it. But authorities saw it as the construction of a new mosque, which it rejects and prevents Muslims from doing so throughout the Arakan state.
The government of Myanmar has been discriminating against Muslims, banning the construction of new mosques in Muslim areas and also preventing the restoration and repair of damaged mosques, which is seen as a strengthening of Islam in the predominantly Buddhist region.
