The United Nations has warned relief workers in western Myanmar of rising hostility and impending protests from the extremist Buddhist majority in Arakan state.
Reuters received the text of a “precautionary security notice” distributed to 300 UN staff and international non-governmental organizations in Arakan on Wednesday.
It warns of “the possibility of increasing unrest” and the possibility of demonstrations in the offices of aid agencies in the country, which have already been subjected to violence by radical Buddhists.
The Office of the United Nations Permanent Coordinator in Myanmar confirmed that the notification had been issued as part of routine safety and security practices.
