The Rohingya Muslims continue to flee Myanmar to Bangladesh and the United Nations is preparing for a possible “new waves,” the UN humanitarian chief said on Friday.
UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Mark Lowcock reiterated the UN’s request for permission to enter Arakan state in northern Myanmar, saying the status quo was “unacceptable”.
“This flow from Myanmar has not stopped yet,” he told a news conference in Geneva on Friday. “It is about the hundreds of thousands of Rohingya who are still in Myanmar. We want to be prepared if there is more flow. ”
“Half a million people are fleeing their country without a trace.”
Joel Millman of the International Organization for Migration told a separate news conference that an estimated 2,000 Rohingyas fled daily from Arakan to Bangladesh, where 515,000 people had taken refuge since the violence broke out on August 25.
