UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed concern over India’s plans to deport Rohingya refugees from Myanmar, stressing that refugees should not return to countries where they fear persecution.
Indian Interior Minister Kirin Rijijo told parliament last week that the central government had directed state authorities to identify and deport illegal immigrants, including Rohingyas, who face persecution in Myanmar, which has a Buddhist majority.
“As soon as the refugees are registered, they will not return to their country where they fear persecution,” deputy spokesman Farhan Haq told reporters on Friday. “We obviously have concerns about the treatment of refugees.”
Haq was responding to a question about India’s plans to deport the Rohingya from Myanmar despite being registered by the United Nations as refugees.
