A Rohingya woman was shot dead and four others received bullet wounds in a reported gunfight between members of Border Guard Bangladesh and a group of ‘drug peddlers’ at the River Naff of Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar early on Thursday.
The Rohingya woman, Jahida Begum, died at a Teknaf hospital while the injured Rohingyas—Kashem, 80, Majuma, 49, Rashida, 25,
all from different areas of Myanmar, were taken into district hospital for better treatment.
The Cox’s bazar BGB sector commander Colonel Rakibul Hoque confirmed the incident.
In a statement later in the day, BGB said two boats were coming from Myanmar and BGB members asked them to stop their boats. Instead, the drug peddlers ‘opened’ fire, forcing the BGB to retaliate.
One of the two boats went back to Myanmar. The BGB officials, however, managed to capture another boat, among them Mohamamd Shafik, a man in his twenties from Shahparirdwip of Teknaf, was unhurt. Police seized a total of 28,000 pieces of Yaba from his possession.
The BGB Teknaf battalion commanding officer Abu Jar Al Akkas said the injured and one unhurt were prosecuted.
