Night curfew in Maungdaw

11 August 2015

Arakan News Agency

Authorities have declared a night time curfew in Maungdaw ordering all Rohingyas to stay in doors after 11pm.

The announcement made by loudspeaker in many areas say terrorists are operating in the area and the government intends to conduct night drives in many neighbourhoods to identify those involved with such activities.

Following the announcement , the villages of Maungdaw are deserted from 8pm. In previous instances, whenever government has declared night curfews, those on the streets after evening have been arrested and tortured. Rohingyas say the actual night curfew often starts immediately after the evening (maghrib) prayer.

The news is more alarming for Rohingyas in the area as in the last few weeks, the security forces are making much ado about militants belonging to IS operating throughout the Arakan.

Independent analysts refute the government claim and say the group does not have a presence in the region.

Rohingyas say the night curfew will result in the police and Hlun Htein breaking into their room and harassing innocent people for money. In previous drives, many women have also been violated. Many Rohingyas are arrested as they step out of their houses to go to the toilets.
