Food shortages will get worse

As floods and storms hit the Arakan, many Rohingyas are passing their days with little work and little food.

Even in normal times, there is little income for Rohingyas who are often denied permission to leave their neighbourhoods. Now because of the floods, there is no work as agricultural day labourers. In the meantime, the market for fish and woods, have collapsed in face of natural disasters.

Additionally any food stored by the Rohingyas have been swept away by floods.

Rohingyas from all townships in Northern Arakan say food shortages already rampant before the floods have now reached catastrophic levels.

As Rohingyas are unlikely to get any government support, the situation is likely to worsen.

Thousands of hectares of agricultural land has also been destroyed in the floods. Though Rohingya agricultural land has mostly been seized in 2012, the destruction will deprive them of work as day labourers and will dampen the market.
