Myanmar’s Union Election Commission (UEC) is calling on international election monitors to abide by its rules during the upcoming general election tentatively set for early November.
A notification published by the UEC Friday urged foreign monitoring teams to refrain from bias towards state authorities, political parties and candidates, and disallows support or opposition to a political party or candidate.
“Only those in charge of the monitoring teams can release their assessments and opinions to the media after submitting their findings to the UEC,” it said.
Monitoring teams are also advised to obey their visa conditions and follow the advice of security personnel for their own safety.
Myanmar last held its election on Nov 7, 2010 when the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) won the majority votes with its chairman U Thein Sein elected as president.
U Thein will end his term in March next year.
