Myanmar Navy shot 6 Bangladeshi fishermen

Six Bangladeshi fishermen were injured when Myanmar Navy opened fire at them in the Bay of Bengal near St Martin’s Island today.

The injured are Osman Gani, 22, Rafiqul Islam, 30, and Nur Ahmed, 32, of Nuniar Chhara in Sadar town, and Saiful Islam, 35, of Moheshkhali upazila in the district, reports our Cox’s Bazar correspondent.

The names of two other victims could not be known immediately.

A Myanmar Navy ship chased a trawler and opened fire when the fishermen were at east of Chhera Dwip near St Martin this morning, leaving the six injured, Md Saiful Absar, coast guard commander in St Martin’s camp.

Locals and Coast Guard personnel took them to a local hospital with bullet injuries in their legs, hands and under the eyes after they reached at St Martin’s Ghat around 5:00 pm, he said.

They were later shifted to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex.

Myanmar Government has a long history of un tolerable actions and violations of Human Rights towards innocent, long history of persecution against Rohingya Muslims which has caused an influx of Rohingya refugees escaping violence.

In recent times there were similar reports of Myanmar authority gunning down Rohingyas escaping Arakan state of Myanmar amid the crackdown upon them.
