Myanmar authorities on Wednesday sentenced 22 Rohingya villagers to three years’ imprisonment in the town of Buthidaung in northern Arakan province on charges that the families of the detainees said were false and false.
The authorities arbitrarily arrested 49 Rwandan villagers from the village of “U Hla Pe” on August 16, 2017 from the city and then released. Afterwards, 25 were of them released from the BGP camp in the ‘Nyaung Chaung’ region on ransom.
According to the villagers, the remaining 24 detainees were sent to Buthidaung Prison on false charges of criminal Sections 17/1 and 17/2. Later on, Section 17/2 was dismissed and they were continued to be prosecuted under the Section 17/1.
The villagers confirmed that the people who had been sentenced were innocent and arbitrarily detained.
