A week ago, the government of Myanmar resumed the siege, raids and random arrests in the towns and villages of the Rohingya minority in Maungdaw and Buthidaung north of Arakan province in western Myanmar.

A local source told Arakan news agency that the police and army forces stormed the town of Ludaing in the city of Maungdaw and arrested a number of Rohingyas arbitrarily and provocatively, which raised fear among the people and did not go out to avoid arrest in the event of continued siege and raid by the government.

In a related context, the agency’s correspondent reported that three members of the Myanmar army, in Buthidaung city, arbitrarily arrested seven-year-old Rohingya in a mosque while praying. He was beaten and abused before being released by payment of a fine for practicing religious rites in the mosque.
