The Myanmar authorities arrested 16 Rohingyas on charges of leaving Arakan and trying to flee into other parts of the country.
Sources told Arakan News Agency that the detainees were accompanied by other Buddhists and received help from smugglers to get them out of the country.
The sources added that the detainees were stopped in the city of Magway on the famous Irrawaddy River in the south-east of the state of Arakan on their way to the south of the country.
The detainees may be sentenced to two years’ imprisonment under the law enacted by the Myanmar government in the 1990s.
The Myanmar authorities impose a suffocating blockade on Rohingya in Arakan state, preventing them from moving between villages and preventing them from leaving the state to other states.
