The Myanmar army has decided to use helicopters and tanks in the operation, which they described as a clean-up operation west of Arakan state.
This came in a statement to Myanmar Minister of Border Affairs Lt. Gen Ye Aung when he met with 11 senior officials in the city of Akyab, capital of Arakan state.
According to one of the attendees at the meeting, the minister announced that the government would use helicopters, tanks and others in the crackdown on what they described as Muslim militants.
The Myanmar government has sent hundreds of troops to beef up security in the northwestern state of Arakan after a wave of killings, raising fears of further violence and instability in the troubled region.
