Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Ahmed Zahid Hamidi said that his visit to the Rohingya refugee camps is essential because the transformation of the issue into a regional and global humanitarian issue should be addressed.
Malaysia has no intention of interfering in Myanmar’s internal affairs when it talks about the Rohingya issue in that country, but the problem has long been a humanitarian issue, according to Malaysia’s Bernama News Agency.
“Since the efforts of the solution can not be undertaken by Bangladesh alone, it definitely needs the help of others, including Malaysia,” Hamidi said. “Malaysia believes that this humanitarian problem needs to be resolved through regional cooperation, especially ASEAN.”
Although Myanmar was among ASEAN member States, humanitarian issues must be cross-border; Malaysia therefore insisted through the Prime Minister that Myanmar should solve the problem with the assistance of international organizations.
