International official: Humanitarian agencies are unable to reach Arakan state

The inability of the UN and its humanitarian agencies to reach the troubled Arakan state of Myanmar, from which some 515,000 Rohingya minority have fled to Bangladesh since August 25, has been confirmed by Mr. Mark Lowcock, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Coordination and Emergency Relief.

Lowcock told a news conference in Geneva on Friday that the organization needed unhindered access to the territory and that a high-level UN team should be able to visit the country in the coming days. A donor conference was also announced on October 23, In order to increase aid to refugees from Rohingya to Bangladesh, and stressed the need to be prepared in the event of a new displacement of Rohingya.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM), speaking at a press conference in Geneva on Friday, quoted Joel Milman as saying that nearly 2,000 Rohingya refugees arrive every day in Bangladesh, noting that observers on the ground indicated that up to 100,000 people were waiting in the city of Buthidaung, north of Arakan state, is to cross to Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh.
