Immigration officials addressed a gathering of villagers from 15 localities at Taimbru, Maungdaw North on Sunday, according to our local correspondent.
During the meeting, immigration officials told Rohingyas that they should turn in their white cards willingly before May 31 as their cards will be replaced.
Those with evidence of residency in the country before 1948 would be granted the blue or the green card which entitles more privileges than the white card, though less than the pink card. Those who did not provide such evidence would still be entitled to a new white card, said immigration officials.
Locals however say that they are assured by the immigration officials’ promises and sees this as a trick to get them to surrender their white card.
Government declaration that the white card must be turned over by May 31 has worried Rohingya Muslims who see the initiative to permanently expel them from the country.
