A Human Rights Committee of India’s National Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to the federal government seeking a detailed report on the government’s plan to deport some 40,000 Rwandan refugees living in the country illegally, an official of the Human Rights Commission said on Saturday.
The Human Rights Committee requested clarification from the Government following media reports indicating that India was moving ahead with plans to deport the Rohingya and had begun discussions with the Governments of Myanmar and Bangladesh on the matter.
The Human Rights Committee considered that its intervention was correct in the matter from a human rights perspective.
The National Human Rights Commission also noted that “the Supreme Court of India has consistently held that the fundamental right enshrined in article 21 of the Constitution of India on the right to life and personal liberty applies to all, regardless of whether they are Indian citizens or not . ”
It is reported that thousands of Rohingya are currently living in most parts of India, especially in Hyderabad, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, the Delhi metropolitan area, Rajasthan, Jammu and elsewhere.
