France supports the formation of a committee to discuss the violations of the Rohingya minority in Myanmar

France expressed its support for the establishment of a fact-finding commission on serious human rights violations in Myanmar, particularly against the Muslim minority of Rohingya.
This came in a statement issued by the French Foreign Ministry on Monday to mark the conclusion of the 34th session of the Human Rights Council on March 24th.
France, along with its European partners, has supported the Human Rights Council to commission an investigation into allegations of serious abuses in Myanmar, particularly against the Rohingya minority, as well as to renew the mandate of the International Independent Investigation Mission to Combat Impunity in Syria.

France welcomed the extension of the work of other human rights missions in Mali and Iran, as well as the work of special rapporteurs on human rights defenders and freedom of expression and those dealing with torture, cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment.

The Council further strengthened the mandate of the Southern Sudan Human Rights Commission to collect evidence of serious violations committed in the country, the statement added. It also decided to strengthen the follow-up of human rights in Libya and North Korea.

France also commended the statement by the President of the Human Rights Council that national human rights institutions in Haiti should be strengthened with the assistance of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The Minister of State for European Affairs, Harlem Desire, stated on March 1st that the priorities and objectives that France intends to continue in the context of its candidacy for a new term of the Human Rights Council for the period 2018-2020.
