Buddhist mayor harasses Rohingyas by extortion

Rohingyas in Shilkhali south of Maungdaw in Arakan State complained of the arbitrariness of the mayor in the town in dealing with them and the imposition of heavy fines against them. Agency correspondent reported that Buddhist mayor directed trumped-up charges to the people of the town of committing violations of the law without providing clear evidence to convict them, explaining that the fines imposed on them amounting to hundreds of thousands Myanmar kyat, noting that the mayor – who has only been in office more than three months has started collecting money illegally during this period.
