Renewed tensions have broken out in the restive village of Ludaing in Northern of Maungdaw as arsonists allegedly belonging to the security forces set fire to a house and fired blank shots to create panic and fear among Rohingya villagers.
Last Thursday, after midnight locals heard gunshots in the village. When they came out of their houses to compress the situation, they saw a house engulfed in flames.
The house belongs to Noor Alam who was attacked along with his family, while trying to flee to Bangladesh in midst of recent outbreak of violence against Rohingya by security forces. He and his entire family are believed to have been killed in the attack on the Naf river last year.
One local eyewitness in condition of anonymity said he saw at least one attacker dressed in the army uniform.
Local sources says that anyone moving around at late hour of the night can only do so with the backing of the security forces.
A night curfew in the area is enforced by thousands of soldiers and there has been no noticeable de-escalation in the presence of the Tatmadaw even though the government had declared an end of clearance operations in February.
Ludaing was one of the villages targeted by the Tatmadaw in the recent clearance operations with dozens being killed, and many women raped. Much of the populace has already left for Bangladesh.
