The head of the Arab parliament, Meshaal al-Salami, called for the perpetrators of the “massacres” against the Rohingya Muslims in the western province of Arakan to be presented to the ICC as crimes against humanity.
This was in a speech at the 137th Session of the General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, held in St. Petersburg, Russia, under the title “Promoting Multiculturalism and Peace through Interfaith and Ethnic Dialogue”.
In his speech, al-Salami called for “urgent and immediate action to stop the massacres against the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar and to bring the perpetrators to the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.”
He stressed “the rejection of linking violence and terrorism to the Islamic religion, and denouncing discriminatory measures against Muslims.”
The Myanmar army has been committing serious human rights violations in northern Arakan province since August, using excessive force against the Rohingya Muslims, according to media reports.
Thousands of Rohingya people were killed, according to local activists.
The massive violations have led some 600,000 Rohingyas to take refuge in neighboring Bangladesh, according to the latest UN figures.
Arakan is one of Myanmar’s poorest regions and since 2012 has seen violence between Buddhists and Muslims, killing hundreds of people and displacing hundreds of thousands.
The Myanmar government considers Rohingya “illegal immigrants from Bangladesh” under a 1982 law, while the United Nations classifies them as “the most persecuted religious minority in the world.”
