The Asean Rohingya Center (ARC) here has proposed that 2017 be declared “International Rohingya Solidarity Year.”
ARC executive director, Dr Mohd Helmi Ibrahim, told to NST that the declaration is supported by various non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
“The purpose of the declaration is to increase regional awareness (of the need to put) an end to the abuse of human rights, discrimination and violence against the Rohingya in Myanmar’s restive Arakan state,” he said.
Dr Mohd Helmi presented the declaration to Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC)’s Special Envoy to Myanmar, Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar, during the launch of the “2017 Year of Solidarity with Rohingyas” forum at the Malaysian Institute of Integrity.
The ARC is a Kuala Lumpur-based organisation, comprising 60 NGOs from throughout Asean, advocating for an end to the persecution of the Rohingya.
