KUALA LUMPUR: The Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (Abim) today held a peaceful rally at Dataran Merdeka here to call on the Myanmar government to recognise the Rohingya as its citizens.
Abim president Amidi Abdul Manan said on that note, it would organise a ‘#citizenship4rohingya’ campaign nationwide as part of an advocacy effort to get the Myanmar government to do so.
He said Malaysians from all walks of life, regardless of race and religion, should support the campaign.
The campaign promotes universal values, and as well as on the need to uphold the dignity of all people, regardless of their skin colour, religion and geographical location, he added.
In an effort to assist the Rohingya refugees, Amidi said Abim, with the cooperation of the Global Peace Mission, Future Global Network and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) had set up three Rohingya Education Centres (REC).
The centres, in Klang, Penang and Kuantan , serve as a platform to provide basic education for the Rohingya children in Malaysia, he added. – Bernama
