A delegation from several United Nations organizations and human rights organizations arrived in the Rohingya refugee camps in the city of Akyap, capital of Arakan state in Myanmar, met the displaced and heard their demands, complaints and testimonies about the government.
The delegation included representatives of UNHCR, WFP and a Malaysian human rights organization interested in the Rohingya issue.
The correspondent of the Arakan news agency that the delegation was briefed on the poor living conditions and suffering experienced by the Rohingya Muslims there in the camps and heard the words of the displaced and their testimonies and needs.
The IDPs have called for the re-citizenship of the Rohingya ethnic minority in Myanmar, freedom of movement and access to international humanitarian aid and medical supplies, stressing their refusal to accept citizenship cards that the Myanmar government wishes to give them.
The displaced said they did not trust the committees set up by the Myanmar government to look into their case and hearing their testimony about the army’s campaign against them over the past months and the abuses committed against them for decades.
