More than 68,000 people have signed a petition demanding that Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar state adviser and head of the military, Ming Aung Hlaing, be referred to the International Court of Justice for “ethnic cleansing” of Rohingya Muslims in Arakan province.
A total of 68,455 people, signed the petition on the website of the United States Change Organization.
The organization said in a statement posted on its website that it has a large number of video footage and reports that the government of Myanmar is committing acts of persecution and ethnic cleansing against the Rohingya minority in Arakan province in the west of the country.
“Children, women and the elderly are subjected to torture, rape, murder and the burning of their homes.”
They stressed the need to “take action against the Myanmar State Counselor and Commander of the Army and submit them to the International Court of Justice in The Hague to be questioned and tried for the crimes for which they are responsible.”
Earlier in the day, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on world leaders to do more to help the Rohingya Muslims facing genocide.
Since 25th August, the Myanmar army has committed serious human rights violations north of Arakan province, using excessive force against Rohingya Muslims, according to media reports.
Erdogan has already discussed these violations with about 20 leaders as current chairman of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
The UNHCR announced earlier today that more than 87,000 Rohingya refugees from Arakan have fled to Bangladesh because of recent violations.
